Healthy teeth start with healthy habits

Brownhill Playgroup is delighted to be part of the AP Smilestars  supervised toothbrushing programme, on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

The programme supports children aged 2–5 years in participating nurseries, schools and early years settings to develop healthy toothbrushing habits from an early age.

Every day, trained staff help children brush their teeth using a safe and effective technique. Each child has their own toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, which are regularly replaced.

Why are healthy teeth so important?

Healthy teeth and gums help children eat, sleep, speak, play and smile with confidence.

Tooth decay can cause pain and may affect a child’s sleep, eating, growth and ability to enjoy everyday activities. That’s why building good habits early can make such a big difference.

5 simple steps to a healthy smile

1. Brush twice a day
Brush for 2 minutes, last thing at night and once during the day.

2.Use fluoride toothpaste

For children aged 3 and over, use toothpaste containing 1350–1500 ppm fluoride to help strengthen teeth and prevent decay.

3. Spit, don’t rinse

After brushing, encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste rather than rinsing with water. This allows the fluoride to keep protecting their teeth.

4. Choose water or milk between meals

Try to avoid sugary drinks, fizzy drinks and fruit juice between meals.

5. Choose tooth-friendly snacks
Fruit, vegetables and cheese are great options.

This is the video we use at Playgroup, be careful its catchy!
